   Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who is best known for his role in establishing a sea route from Europe to India. He was born in Sines, Portugal in 1469, and grew up in a noble family. In 1497, he set out on his first expedition, with the goal of finding a sea route to India that would bypass the Arab merchants who controlled the land routes.

   Da Gama went on to make two more voyages to India, in 1502 and 1524, and he also served as the Governor of Portuguese India from 1524 until his death in 1524. During his time in India, he engaged in a number of conflicts with local rulers, and he is sometimes criticized for his ruthless tactics in dealing with his enemies.
