Background of Bashar al-Assad and Syria
Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad, in 2000. During his presidency, Syria experienced significant political and military developments, including the Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011 and became one of the most consequential conflicts in modern Middle Eastern history.
Syria is located in Western Asia and shares borders with Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel. Its capital city is Damascus, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.
