Background of the Renaming of Ceylon to Sri Lanka
The island nation was known as Ceylon during the colonial period under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. After gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1948, the country continued to use the name “Dominion of Ceylon.” However, there was growing support for adopting a name that better reflected the country’s cultural and historical heritage.
