Background of WHO’s COVID-19 Variant Naming System
The World Health Organization introduced the Greek alphabet naming system in 2021 to make variant names easier to pronounce and to avoid stigmatizing countries where variants were first identified. Major variants were named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron.
Omicron was first reported from Southern Africa and quickly spread worldwide. It produced multiple subvariants such as BA.1, BA.2, XBB, JN.1, and others. Although newer subvariants have emerged over time, WHO has continued to classify them under the Omicron lineage rather than assigning new Greek-letter names.
The Greek-letter naming system significantly improved public communication regarding COVID-19 variants throughout the pandemic.
