The Indian Air Force initiated the “Vayu Baan” project in March 2026, which is the country’s first drone program dropped from a helicopter. The technology consists of a small, self-governing drone that is launched from helicopters and is capable of independent navigation, real-time video transmission, and precision strikes with an onboard warhead. This greatly lowers the risk to aircrew while enabling helicopters to engage targets from stand-off ranges.
