Launched in its second edition in March 2026, the IOS SAGAR (Indian Ocean Ship-Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative is a naval cooperation program aimed at enhancing cooperative maritime security throughout the Indian Ocean Region. Through the project, navy personnel from sixteen member states of the Indian Ocean Navy Symposium (IONS) train and sail together on Indian military vessels.
The program’s main goals are to improve professional collaboration, interoperability, and a common knowledge of maritime operations. After completing extensive training in seamanship, navigation, firefighting, and Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations, participants participate in cooperative sea deployments to tackle common issues like trafficking, piracy, and protecting crucial marine lanes.
