Every year on March 1st, the world observes Zero Discrimination Day, a global effort spearheaded by UNAIDS to commemorate everyone’s right to live a full, productive life with dignity and to advance equality. The day was first observed in 2014 after UNAIDS’ “Zero Discrimination Campaign” was launched in December 2013. The butterfly, which is widely acknowledged as a metaphor for transformation and good change, served as the campaign’s symbol.
The day is a potent reminder to promote inclusive societies where everyone may access justice, healthcare, education, and work without fear of discrimination. In line with more general sustainable development and human rights objectives, UNAIDS promotes particular themes and campaigns each year to increase awareness and spur action against discriminatory laws, practices, and attitudes around the world.
