Background of Al-Muqawqis of Egypt
Al-Muqawqis was the Byzantine-appointed ruler of Egypt during the early seventh century. Historical records differ regarding his exact identity, but he is commonly identified as Cyrus of Alexandria in Islamic historical literature. When Prophet Muhammad sent letters to various world rulers inviting them to Islam, Al-Muqawqis was among those who received one.
Unlike some rulers who rejected the invitation harshly, Al-Muqawqis treated the Prophet’s messenger respectfully. He replied diplomatically and sent gifts to Madinah. His correspondence occupies an important place in Islamic diplomatic history and demonstrates the Prophet’s efforts to communicate peacefully with neighboring states and leaders.
