In late March 2026, Balendra Shah, popularly referred to as “Balen,” was named Nepal’s new prime minister. After his Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured 182 out of 275 seats in the March 5, 2026, legislative election, he was sworn in on March 27, 2026.
The 35-year-old former Kathmandu mayor is Nepal’s youngest prime minister in many years. Additionally, he is the first member of the Madhesi community—people from the southern plains that border India—to occupy the top executive position in the nation.
