Launched in 2024, the “Rio Trio” initiative is a ground-breaking cooperative effort aimed at enhancing synergies between the three Rio Conventions: the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The historic Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 gave rise to all three of these accords, which is why they are generally referred to as the “Rio Conventions.”

The Rio Trio program allows nations to adopt nature-based solutions that simultaneously improve all three environmental pillars by coordinating tactics and encouraging cooperation. For instance, rehabilitating degraded land (UNCCD) can create essential wildlife habitats (CBD) and sequester carbon (UNFCCC).
