In March 2026, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) opened the first “Port of Refuge” (PoR) in history, creating safe havens around India’s coastline for ships in distress.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a port of refuge is a recognized area where ships can seek refuge during maritime emergencies in order to stabilize situations, preserve lives, and minimize environmental damage.

A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding with SMIT Salvage, Royal Boskalis Westminster NV’s salvage division, and the Maritime Emergency Response Centre (MERC) supports the initiative, which will provide India’s maritime safety framework with global salvage expertise and coordinated response capabilities.
