“Water and Gender” is the global subject for World Water Day 2026, and “Where water flows, equality grows” is the campaign motto. This theme emphasizes the crucial connection between gender equality and water access, highlighting the fact that women and girls are disproportionately impacted by the worldwide water crisis.

Approximately 1.1 billion women and girls globally still do not have access to securely managed drinking water, and they sometimes have to spend hours every day fetching water, which can prevent them from attending school and limit their possibilities for employment. The subject promotes women’s leadership in water management, acknowledging that services become more sustainable, efficient, and egalitarian when women have an equal voice in water administration.
